The Magaliesberg is a range of quartzite and shale that lies at the junction of the Highveld grassland and subtropical bush veld (savanna). Protected as Biosphere Reserve by the people who live within it, the area supports a rich biodiversity and a unique cultural heritage. Today, the mountains are most popular among hikers and hang-gliders who make weekend excursions from the nearby cities of Johannesburg and Pretoria. Of particular natural history interest are the colonies of endangered Cape Vultures that breed on the steep south-facing cliffs; a mother vulture and her single nestling are featured in this design.
