Roberts Birds of Kwazulu-Natal and their Zulu Names

The John Voelcker Bird Book Fund, publishers of the Roberts bird books, is proud to launch the Birds of KwaZulu-Natal and their Zulu Names. Accompanied by superb photographs, this ground-breaking book is the first practical bird field guide to give individual Zulu names to 550 species. This book is the result of a six-year Zulu Bird Name Project, facilitated by the authors, together with 18 mother-tongue Zulu-speaking bird experts. This book, based on sound linguistic principles, includes existing Zulu names for certain birds but also adds new species specific names that have been crafted for 67 per cent of the birds. The authors hope that this book will be used to inspire a greater interest, awareness and protection among all South Africans of the avifaunal heritage of KwaZulu-Natal and beyond.
